Member Webinar: Finding your voice in the Australian market

September 29 @ 12:30 pm 1:30 pm AEST

What happens when you land back in Australia half-way through an impressive career, but the networks, the reputation and the recognition you built overseas count for little.

It can be disorientating and deflating. Your voice, your experience, your skills, your status – it can feel like it has drained away.

The truth of course is more encouraging. Your worth is still there – you just need to work on translating it to a new audience.

When Elliot Wilson moved to Melbourne as the partner of an Australian expat-repat, he discovered his long career in financial journalism did not travel so well.

While fortunate to bring his full-time role as Asia Editor for Euromoney magazine with him, his international experience working as a financial journalist in London, Beijing, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Geneva did not translate straight away into local recognition or credibility.

In 2025, Elliot stepped back from writing to create an advisory firm, Edington Advisors, which helps executives and firms find their voice, sharpen their positioning, and tell their story to investors, peers and the public.

In making that move, he had to go from telling other people’s stories to telling his own – a challenging pivot for someone happy to hide behind the microphone. Learning how to speak on digital and physical platforms, calmly, precisely and without fear, while walking the line between opinion and boastfulness, was key.

The challenge for all of us lies in reading the room. A career story that made sense in Hong Kong or London must be adapted to the audience in front of you.

Drawing on his journalistic skills and his own transition, Elliot has developed a practical framework that helps others build a clear professional voice in the Australian market.

Central to this is creating one unifying narrative across LinkedIn, your CV, and your public-facing story. Each one serves a different purpose, and each may target different audiences. But together they must tell the target audience who you are, what you stand for, and where you are going.

Join us for this conversational Learning Lab – whether you are re-entering the market, pondering your future back in Australia, looking to take your career in a new direction, or building a client base.

Key topics include:

  • Making your professional voice part of your broader career strategy
  • Developing a unifying professional narrative across your CV, LinkedIn, and your public voice
  • Finding your authentic voice in public after being professionally quiet online
  • Navigating cultural nuance and “tall poppy” culture
  • Who you are ‘over there’ versus who you are ‘here’
  • How to demonstrate your skills and expertise without overt self-promotion
  • Building an identity beyond your immediate title and employer

You’ll leave with practical ideas to communicate your experience, build authentic visibility and create a professional presence that supports your next move and helps you find your feet here.

Bring your questions – we’ll close with time for live Q&A.

This session will be recorded and added to our video library.
